Your financial support helps the Trust to purchase key conservation properties and to maintain vigilant stewardship of its protected lands.

Charitable Giving Options

Gifts of Cash
Contributions can be made by check or by credit card. These gifts are tax-deductible, up to 50% of donors’ gross income (AGI). If the total of a donor’s charitable gifts exceed 50% of the AGI limit, the balance may be carried over for up to five additional years.

Gifts of Appreciated Securities
Gifts of appreciated securities have a double benefit for a donor. The securities’ full market value is tax-deductible, and if the securities have appreciated in value, capital gains taxation can also be avoided.

Donation of a Remainder Interest
A donor can donate land and continue to live on it and use it. At the end of the specified life interests, full title and control of the property transfers to the Land Trust. The donor may be entitled to an income tax deduction when the gift is made.

Donation of Trade Land
Properties that have little or no conservation value can be donated as trade land. The Trust can sell these properties in order to acquire land with high conservation value or to use in other ways that further the Trust’s conservation goals.

Gifts of Insurance
Some donors may find they no longer need their life insurance policies. Donations of policies can be an important piece of estate planning. Although it is sometimes overlooked, the proceeds from insurance policies may be part of an individual’s taxable estate. Instead of cashing in the policies, donors may gift them to the Land Trust and claim a tax deduction for the cash value of the policy.

Bequests
Many donors make gifts to the York Land Trust through their wills. Bequest provisions in a will allow the donor to control the distribution of the estate, and to preserve as much of the estate as possible through tax-saving opportunities. Bequests can be used to endow an annual contribution, to place conservation easements on land, or to make a special gift that will enhance the York Land Trust’s ability to protect more land in the future.

Please contact the York Land Trust to discuss charitable giving options.
