York Land Trust Focus Areas
York Land Trust protects land in York, Maine, the third largest town in the state by acreage. We prioritize conserving larger parcels that within our MtA2C and Cape Neddick focus areas and contain significant ecological, recreational, or public benefits, such as wildlife habitat, scenic views, agricultural value, climate resilience, or natural resource protection. Parcels that connect to existing conserved lands are of particular interest.
Mt. Agamenticus to the Sea (MtA2C) Focus Area: This 48,000-acre corridor supports the richest diversity of plants and animals in Maine, relying on large, unfragmented blocks of habitat. It contains one of the largest remaining expanses of intact coastal forest between Acadia National Park and the New Jersey Pine Barrens. The uplands and wetlands surrounding Mt. Agamenticus provide habitat for 12 rare animal species and 21 rare plant species. Through the long-term efforts of many public and private partners, there are now over 16,200 acres of conserved land and open space within this focus area with a science-based goal of 19,000 connected acres.
Cape Neddick Focus Area: This 6,300-acre, highly developed region includes vital feeding and nesting grounds for wading birds, waterfowl, and several rare species such as including Harlequin Duck, Spotted Turtle, Needham’s Skimmer (dragonfly), Citrine Forktail (damselfly), and Black Saddlebags (dragonfly). Its wetlands act as natural sponges, reducing flood and erosion risks during storms while supporting vernal pools for sensitive amphibians and aquatic species. The area protects the Cape Neddick River, Josias River, and other tributaries. Remaining undeveloped forest blocks of 400–700 acres provide rare opportunities for maintaining regional habitat connectivity. Existing trails and woods roads also offer potential for expanding public access to this special corner of southern Maine.
In addition to these local priorities, our conservation work supports three of Maine’s Beginning with Habitat focus areas: Mt. Agamenticus, York River Headwaters, and Brave Boat Harbor.
