Local Eagle Scout Builds Bird Boxes to Benefit

If you’ve been to Highland Farm Preserve or Smelt Brook Preserve recently, you may have noticed a collection of 12 new bird boxes scattered throughout the grassy areas of these preserves. These boxes were designed, built and installed by Bradford Newton, a local teen who spearheaded this effort as a capstone Eagle Scout project this past spring. Bradford designed the boxes specifically for sedge wrens — a species that nests in grassy areas across Maine and are listed as endangered in the state — but the boxes are suitable for a variety of bird species.

We’re looking forward to seeing who makes their homes in these boxes, and thank Bradford for all his great work and initiative on this project!
