Exploring Nature’s Bounty

May 1, 2024

As May blooms into Garden for Wildlife Month, York Land Trust (YLT) is sowing the seeds of environmental stewardship with a vibrant array of native plant events. Native plants, the heartbeat of regional ecosystems, have long graced the landscapes of Maine, providing sustenance and sanctuary for indigenous wildlife while anchoring the delicate balance of our natural world.

“We’re delighted to invite the community to immerse themselves in the beauty and significance of native plants,” shares Amelia Nadilo, Executive Director, York Land Trust. “Through our series of events and educational programs, we aim to deepen connections to our natural heritage and foster a shared commitment to conservation.”

Throughout May, YLT invites nature enthusiasts of all ages to embark on a journey of discovery with a trio of free native plant events: a month-long Native Plant Scavenger Hunt, a Gardening with Native Plants Presentation, and our 4th Annual Spring Native Plant & Bake Sale. These initiatives highlight the intricate tapestry of life that thrives within our local landscapes and they help to increase our understanding and awareness of the native plant species here in our area.

The Native Plant Scavenger Hunt, a whimsical adventure through some of York Land Trust’s Public Access Preserves, encourages people to embrace the sensory delights of the outdoors. Armed with a scavenger hunt form, budding naturalists can walk our scenic trails, identifying and celebrating the native flora that grace their path. Upon completion, participants can submit their findings and receive a complimentary packet of wildflower seeds, a humble token of gratitude from Mother Nature herself.

On Friday, May 10th, from 2-3PM, YLT will host a Gardening with Native Plants Presentation by Jake Pierson of Pierson Nurseries in Biddeford. This informative session will empower gardeners to embrace sustainable practices, exploring the importance and benefits of native plants, from supporting pollinators like birds and butterflies, to contributing to healthy soil and water. Attendees will learn best practices to care for native plants and gain invaluable insights into cultivating gardens that will thrive and flourish as vibrant sanctuaries for local wildlife.

The highlight of the series is the 4th Annual Spring Native Plant & Bake Sale Fundraiser, taking place on Saturday, May 11th from 9AM to noon. Featuring over 35 varieties of native perennials, trees, and shrubs, this event offers a kaleidoscope of possibilities for garden enthusiasts and conservation advocates alike. Beyond the botanical bounty, attendees can indulge in sweet treats from the bake sale, revel in outdoor recreation at the Kids’ Activity Corner, and peruse gently used plant baskets and pottery containers, each imbued with the spirit of sustainability.

Together, let us celebrate the timeless beauty and ecological richness of native plants, sowing the seeds of a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come. For complete information please visit www.yorklandtrust.org/events.
